Open Fiber Green: the first photovoltaic plant on an ultra-broadband network site is underway in Lazio

Open Fiber's green revolution starts from Lazio. The first production plant was inaugurated in Castelnuovo di Porto (in the province of Rome). green energy serving the ultra-broadband network in the context of Open Fiber Green. The project, a press release explains, provides for the installation of photovoltaic panels with which it will be possible to produce green electricity for the technological sites, equal to around 60% of their needs. The PCN sites are the hubs of the Open Fiber network in the area. The PCN (Neutral Delivery Point) of Castelnuovo di Porto will produce over 6.000 kilowatt hours a year, which is equivalent to the emissions absorbed in one year by approximately 5.600 square meters of forest.

"Castelnuovo di Porto is only the first stage of a project capable of bringing great benefits, in terms of sustainability and direct reduction of the environmental impact due to the consumption of energy from fossil sources - declared the president of Open Fiber Barbara Marinali -. Climate change and the recent energy crisis have made even more evident the need to accelerate the transition to renewables for the protection of the environment and the economy. With the Open Fiber Green project we intend to make a contribution starting from our plants, distributed throughout the country".

The project, shared with Infratel - the public concessionaire that manages the BUL plan - will bring important benefits in terms of reducing the environmental impact due to energy consumption, and will see, in the coming years, the installation of photovoltaic systems in approximately 650 sites within the municipalities of the white areas, for a total installed capacity of 3,5 megawatts. When all the plants are in operation, the Open Fiber NCPs will allow savings of around 1,7 million euros on the cost of energy every year and a cutting emissions of about 2.100 tons of CO2.

"Open Fiber is building a fiber optic network throughout the country: large and medium-sized cities, villages, industrial areas", concludes the note. So Italy will be able to overcome the digital divide and the inequalities between the territories, allowing economic growth and the repopulation of small municipalities.
