Open Fiber has signed an agreement with Nokia, which will provide it with optical transport technologies. The aim is to expand nationwide ultra-fast fiber directly connecting the homes (FTTH) of more than 6 municipalities in all Italian regions. The maximum speed should be up to one gigabyte per second.
In detail, “Nokia and Siae Microelettronica – reads a note – Nokia's service and technology partners, have set up a consortium to supply the 1830 Optical Network Extender (ONE) and Network Functions Manager-Transport (NFM-T) solutions for the level of aggregation of the Open Fiber access network. The consortium will provide services including installation and commissioning of the network. The UBB network service will then be leased from local fiber operators (FTTH and FTTP) across the country." Specifically Fttp stands for fiber to the premises and is the equivalent of Ftth (fibers to the home) as it connects your home or business directly by fiber from the first available node.
Secondo Elisabetta Ripa, CEO of Open Fiber, “the ultrabroad FTTH infrastructure has proven to be a key factor in accelerating the digital transformation of our country, unlocking new opportunities for the Italian digital economy, stimulating production and promoting competitiveness. We also believe that the choice of Nokia's optical network products and solutions will further accelerate our FTTH infrastructure plan by bringing reliability, openness and innovation to the market”.
Josephine of Foggia, managing director and vice president of Nokia Italia, said he was happy “that Open Fiber has faith in Nokia's optical solutions to expand its ultra-broadband network of the new Gigabit Society. This agreement is important for Nokia Italia and our optical research and development center in Vimercate, where we face the challenges of innovation with great passion, competence and professionalism. Being recognized by a partner like Open Fiber motivates us further”.
Prior to this new agreement, Nokia already supported Open Fiber with optical line terminals (OLT) and customer optical network terminals (ONT) and related services in rural areas of Italy.
