Open Fiber completes the largest optical transport network in Italy

Open Fiber has finished building Zion, the largest Eon (Elastic Optical Network) optical transport network in Italy. The company communicates it, specifying that it is an infrastructure of over 6.300 km of optical fiber, with latest generation equipment, capable of interconnecting Italy from North to South and of connecting the access network that Open Fiber is building in about 7.000 Italian cities and municipalities.

Zion's primacy lies in the very high speed of the photonic connection (already at 200 Gbps -Gigabit per second and soon 400Gbps per optical channel), but also and above all in its flexibility, robustness and scalability. With a simple software command, new services can be configured on Zion in real time, existing ones modified or reconfigured in an intelligent way, guaranteeing transmission with maximum reliability.

The overall capacity of the network already reaches, and in the future may exceed, 10 Terabits per second (1 million megabits) with the availability of 50 optical channels at 200 Gbps. Zion uses ROADM and Flex Grid technologies for optical signal transmission.
