Open Fiber brings optical fiber to Mazara del Vallo

Agreement between the Municipality and Open Fiber for a new ultra-broadband network - An investment of 5 million euros to wire 15 thousand property units

Open Fiber brings optical fiber to Mazara del Vallo

The optical fiber arrives in Mazara del Vallo. Open Fiber is about to build an entirely optical fiber telecommunications network in the Sicilian city. The latest generation network is built in FTTH (Fiber To The Home) mode, i.e. the optical fiber right into the house) the only one capable of returning connection speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second and latency of less than 5 milliseconds.

The company led by Elisabetta Ripa has planned a investment of 5 million euros, needed to wire 15 real estate units. The agreement was sealed by the councilor Vincenzo Giacalone together with the representatives of Open Fiber Clara Distefano (regional manager Sicily), Dorotea Lo Greco (Institutional Affairs Southern Area) and Daniele di Pietrantonio (Field manager and responsible for cabling works in the city).

The project envisages extensive reuse of existing infrastructure, in order to limit the impact and any inconvenience to the community as much as possible. As in construction sites open throughout the country, the excavations will be carried out favoring innovative methods with low environmental impact. Among these the most used is the minitrench: excavation on the road, 10 cm wide and 35-50 cm deep, filled with pink cement mortar when laying the cables.

After at least 30 days (time necessary for the settlement) we move on to the definition of the intervention with the scarification of the roadway concerned and the hot laying of the asphalt. Each phase is the result of coordination between Open Fiber and the competent municipal technicians. Overall they will be laid out 9 thousand kilometers of fiber optic cables, with the completion of the works expected within 18 months of the start of construction.

“The path of innovation and digitization of our city continues – he declared Vincent Giacalone – with this agreement, our city will be equipped with an ultra-broadband network and dedicated fiber connections will also be created for 30 municipal buildings which will thus be able to communicate with each other with very high performance".

“An ultra-broadband network – he underlined Dorothea Lo Greco – allows you to enable services that benefit the entire community, even more so in the face of the pandemic that has forced us all to reformulate lifestyles and production methods: smartworking, telemedicine, teleworking, remote education, Industry 4.0, video surveillance, home automation".
