A Ragusa construction work is nearing completion new fiber optic telecommunications network realized by Open Fiber. A fundamental technological breakthrough for citizens and local production realities: the network was in fact made available to users in November 2020, a few months after the start of the construction sites open in full lockdown. The digitization intervention carried out by the company led by the managing director Mario Rossetti registers a 90% progress: currently there are around 35 real estate units already wired out of the total 40 to be covered within the year, thanks to a direct investment of 14 million euro. The infrastructure extends for approx 180 kilometers, 150 of which created through the reuse of existing underground and overhead networks with the consequent containment of potential inconvenience for citizens. Overall in Ragusa they were spread out well 23 thousand kilometers of fiber optic cables.
The performance of the OF network
The citizens and businesses of Ragusa, from the center to the suburbs, can therefore already take advantage of a cutting-edge infrastructure: the telecommunications network in FTTH mode (Fiber-to-the-home) allows you to reach connection speeds of up to 10 Gigabit per second e latency less than 5 milliseconds, services able to best support services that have become indispensable such as smart working e telemedicine.
How to activate the connection
It should be remembered that Open Fiber is a wholesale only operator, that is, it builds the infrastructure and makes it available to all national and local partner operators at non-discriminatory technical and economic conditions. At the moment I am 72 different operators who are marketing services on the ultra-fast network built in Ragusa: if citizens want to request activation, it is therefore necessary to verify on the Open Fiber website coverage of your house number, contact one of the operators present, choose the preferred tariff plan and then start surfing at high speed.
The other Municipalities served in the Ragusa area
The technological intervention concerns as well the other municipalities of the province of Ragusa. Open Fiber is investing its own funds of a private nature also in Vittoria (where the works are already completed) e Modica. The digitization of the other centers is instead part of the BUL Plan launched by the Ministry of Economic Development, a project intended for the so-called white areas, i.e. those discovered by ultra-broadband connectivity services where no operator has expressed an interest in investing. By virtue of the assignment to Open Fiber of the tenders announced by Infratel, an in-house company of the MISE, the network built in these locations is and will remain public property. The works are currently completed in the municipalities of acate, Chiaramonte Gulfi, Giarratana, Monterosso Almo and in a fraction of scicli included in the announcement. Construction sites are underway at ispica e Santa Croce in Camerina and they will be leaving shortly also a Comiso.
