Open Fiber: the "5G City" in Prato and L'Aquila

Open Fiber, a company 50% owned by Enel and Cassa depositi e prestiti, and Wind Tre announce the start of the project after being awarded the tender published by the Ministry of Economic Development last September. The experimentation has characteristics that can be replicated at a national and European level and will involve universities, research centers and companies (including E-distribuzione and Zte)

Building a 5G city, in which families and businesses are able to take advantage of everyday services quickly and easily. The challenge launched by Wind Tre and Open Fiber is ambitious, but the potential benefits that would derive from it are numerous. Areas such as health, mobility and transport, security and emergency management would become easier to manage.

The two companies active in the telecommunications field have started testing 5G technology in the cities of Prato and L'Aquila. Open FIber and Wind Tre are currently individually involved in two Ultra Broadband infrastructure projects in Italy.

"The evolution of telecommunications is a fundamental step for the economic and social development of Italy today, just as happened with the construction of the motorway network in the XNUMXs", declared Tommaso Pompei, CEO of Open Fiber, speaking at the presentation of the project.

“The city of Prato inaugurates our '5G City' model: a large ecosystem open to citizens, public administrations, industry,
universities and research centers with the aim of improving the efficiency of services and creating new growth opportunities, – added Pompei.

Pompeii announced on the sidelines of the project presentation that "the auction of 5G frequencies is one of the topics under discussion these days", but so far no decision has been taken. To participate in the tender, added Pompeii, an important economic commitment is required, equal to "a few billion euros".

Satisfaction also from the CEO of Wind Tre, Jeffrey Hedberg: "5G is not just speed, but it is a technology that creates an ecosystem to innovate and bring applications and solutions to the market in different fields: telemedicine, education, smart homes, smart cities and augmented reality".

“We are verifying our interest in participating without renouncing our characteristics as a wholesale operator. All operators not interested in investing in frequencies could refer to Open Fiber which would offer a complete service. For Prato alone, the investment amounted to 30-40 million euros which will be divided among all the companies involved in the experimentation project”, Pompei concluded.
