UN: off to the climate summit, but Trump is not there

Fight against climate change, with the Amazon forest on fire in Bolsonaro's Brazil, and the crisis between the United States and Iran. These are the topics at the center of the 74th United Nations General Assembly which will officially open on Tuesday in New York. The American president, Donald Trump, refused to participate in the climate summit, which opens at the same time as the meeting today (the Climate Action Summit).

They will also be missing Australia e Japan, who don't want to question their energy production with coal.

To the other countries, however, the UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, asked to prepare with specific plans for reducing emissions to be implemented soon.

The Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, will illustrate the government's agenda, the medium and short-term objectives with which Italy is at the forefront of the European Union countries on the Paris Agreement. And he will present the initiative on digitization and energy efficiency.

Also on Monday, in conjunction with the climate summit, Trump will host a event at the Glass Palace on religious freedom, and as the White House says "it will call on the international community to take concrete measures to prevent attacks against people based on their religion or beliefs".

The assembly with heads of state and government from all over the world gathered in the same building is also an opportunity to lower tension on some problematic fronts with bilateral meetings.

However, there will not be the most awaited one, between Trump and the Iranian president Hassan Rouhani. The latter disembarked yesterday in the United States, not without difficulty: in fact, the United States did not grant visas to some of his escorts and accompanying journalists.

After the bombing of Saudi refineries, Iran arrives to present a plan to restore peace to the Persian Gulf. It will be called the "Coalition for Hope": a diplomatic initiative that should involve the countries of the region. It is not yet clear whether it also aims to involve the world's big names – China, the USA and Russia – or to try to limit their influence in a vital area.
