On New Year's Eve we will toast with the first Prosecco Rosé, the EU has given the ok

With the new version, Prosecco is preparing to capture a new market which has experienced interesting growth in foreign markets in recent years. The goal is 10% of production, or 50 million bottles of prosecco rose' to be placed on the market”.

The first Prosecco Rosè can be uncorked on New Year's Eve. In fact, the European Union has given the green light to the ordinary modification to the production regulations of the most requested Italian wine abroad with the publication in the Official Journal of the European Union C 362/26. The new type of Prosecco for Coldiretti - represents an important enrichment for the most exported Italian wine in the world with a sales value of 533 million euros in the first seven months of 2020 despite the difficulties caused by Covid on national trade and sales of catering with the stop at parties and ceremonies. With the new offer, Prosecco is preparing to capture a new market which has experienced interesting growth in foreign markets in recent years. The goal is 10% of production, or 50 million bottles of prosecco rose' to be placed on the market”.

Great satisfaction was also expressed by the Minister of Agriculture Teresa Bellanova: "The European go-ahead for the production specification of Prosecco Rosé Doc with the modification we requested which makes it possible to count on the new typology - writes the minister in a note - is a 'great news. Which allows the producers of a wine that has always enjoyed extraordinary success beyond the borders, to preside over and conquer an ever wider market and which in recent years has recorded increasingly important growth in economic and quantitative terms. We are talking about an army of 11.460 winegrowers, 1.192 wineries, 347 sparkling wine companies that contribute to the unrivaled success of an entirely made in Italy denomination, which has become an emblem and undisputed flag in the world. The acceptance of our request will be a driving force for the entire national wine system which, due to the pandemic, has recorded a contraction in the value of sales abroad after the record set last year with over 6 billion euros and which is suffering in a clear way also due to the obvious problems that the catering channel is facing".

To produce Prosecco Rosé it will now be possible to use 10 to 15 percent of Pinot Noir alongside the Glera (the variety with which Prosecco is produced). This had aroused a hornet's nest of controversy among the purists who considered this typology a betrayal of tradition and who would have in any case preferred Raboso to be used instead of Pinot Noir, which is the typical production of this area. However, it should be noted that the rosé version is not foreseen for the hills of Valdobbiadene and Asolo where the prestigious DOCG quality of Prosecco is produced.
