Occupied Germany at the top for 11 years

Employment in German manufacturing industry rose to a new high in over eleven years: as communicated by the Federal Statistical Office, the number of employed people in manufacturing firms with at least 50 employees was 5,425 million at the end of August, marking “a new high since January 2005”.

The figure is up by 37 units, or 0,7%, compared to August 2015.

The new record is based on the robust economic trend that sees the Government and economists aiming for growth of just under 2% for this year with continued, albeit more moderate, expansion of exports. At the sectoral level, the most significant increases in employment were recorded by the automotive and plastics industries with +1,9% in both sectors. Followed by food and feed manufacturing companies (+1,7%) while employment in the metallurgical industry (-1,6%), chemicals (-0,6%) and machinery (-0,1%) fell ). Hours worked in manufacturing also rose 7,3% year-on-year to 671 million in August even though the month had two more working days this year. Wages also increased with an annual +3,3% to approximately 21,2 billion.
