Sunglasses: export boom in 2011 +14%

Last year, Italy exported 1,6 billion euros of sunglasses worldwide – the United States, France and Spain are the favorite destinations – As for imports, China alone accounts for more than 40%.

When fashion, design and practicality come together in a single object, there is often the hand of some Italian behind it. And so it is in the world of sunglasses. In 2011, Italy exported around 1,6 billion euros of glasses with dark lenses around the world, marking a growth of 14% compared to 2010. This was reported by the Chamber of Commerce of Milan, emphasizing that instead imports did not exceed 206 million euros (a growth of 9,9% compared to 2010). 

The analysis shows that theEuropean Union receives most of Italian exports (39%) followed by North America (22,9%). Made in Italy sunglasses are particularly appreciated by the Americans (358 million exports to this country, 22,6% of the total), by the French (191 million, 12%) and by the Spanish (128 million, 8,1%).

As far as the import is concerned, the China is confirmed as the queen with 43,2% of total Italian imports sector equal to 89 million euros in 2011.

The study notes that more than half of the sunglasses manufacturing companies are located in the Veneto region – as many as 53% of the total 740 companies active in the sector. On a provincial scale, however, first is Belluno, with 244 companies (33% of the total), followed by Treviso (14,6%) and Varese (3,4%). Turin and Milan follow (respectively 3,2% and 3,1%).
