NY: the Plaza hotel, Trump's old nightmare, is up for auction

The most famous hotel in New York will go up for auction. This is the Plaza hotel, which will be sold on April 26 after the default on the loan of the Indian property Sahara India Pariwar, whose founder - the tycoon Subrata Roy - has been in prison in India since early 2014 for tax fraud.

The historic building's restaurants, bedrooms and retail space will be auctioned off. Anyone who purchases the package will also become the owner of the Dream Downtown hotel in the New York neighborhood of Chelsea. The news was released by Bloomberg, which cites anonymous sources.

Considering the location, prestige and importance of the structure, the price of the Plaza could exceed one billion dollars, but some insiders think it could even reach 3 billion.

The auction was organized by David and Simon Reuben, the billionaire brothers who hold the mortgage on the five-star hotel. The two bought the loan from the Bank of China after the Sahara default.

International symbol of luxury and famous film set, the Plaza opened to the public on October 1907, 1943. In 407,5 it passed into the hands of Hilton and was subsequently purchased by Donald Trump for XNUMX million dollars. It has also obtained the classification of "national monument".

In 1995 Trump himself sold the hotel for 325 million dollars to Richard Campbell: the current candidate in the Republican primaries, therefore, recorded a loss of over 80 million in the sale.

In 2004 the Plaza underwent a major renovation, which also gave part of the building to residential and commercial use. From the hands of the Israeli group El Ad Properties it passed to Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, until arriving in the portfolio of the Indian Sahara.

Originally the hotel had 800 rooms. Following the 2004 renovation, the hotel features 282 guest rooms, an exercise facility, spa, indoor pool and 152 condominium residential units, as well as a vast underground shopping arcade.
