Nutellagate in France: brawls at the supermarket, the Government intervenes

Nutellagate in France. The Intermarché supermarket chain has unleashed panic among consumers by launching a very (perhaps too) convenient promotion on the Ferrero hazelnut cream. Result: people scuffled among the shelves to stock up on cheap jars.

The situation became so serious that the Paris government had to intervene. The French Economy Minister, Bruno Le Maire, criticized the commercial operation, inviting the supermarket chain to "no longer do" this kind of promotion.

"I met the director of Intermarché yesterday: I told him that similar operations could no longer be proposed again, because one cannot witness scenes like this for four consecutive mornings in France", Le Maire told Rtl microphones, inviting all do not "trivialize" the question.

On promotion, the minister said: “There is an agreement that was signed by Intermarché and the other distributors not to do this kind of promotion. They have to keep their word."

Intermarché offered a 70% discount on Nutella from Thursday to Saturday, selling a 950 gram pack for 1,41 euros instead of 4,50. The operation gave rise to real riots in several supermarkets.
