New urban forests: Arbolia project and landfill reclamation Commissioner

Create new green areas in Italy, contributing to the fight against climate change and the sustainable development of the territories. With this objective in mind, the new collaboration between the Sole Commissioner for the reclamation of illegal landfills e Arbolia, a benefit company created by Snam and the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti Foundation to develop new green belts in Italy. The agreement was announced in Ferrara during the Rem Tech Expo 2021, an international event dedicated to the sustainable development of the territory, of which Arbolia was a guest.

In detail, the memorandum of understanding aims to start reforestation projects in the reclaimed landfill areas distributed throughout the national territory, so as to give back to citizens the sites that currently host illegal landfills, promoting the economic and social development of the territories through the creation of new urban forests.

"The waste cycle is a cycle that must not end only in a landfill, or the death of the territory, but must, if there are any possibilities, tend towards rebirth or the return of the earth to the community and its natural habitat - he declared the General Vadala -. The stipulation of this agreement with Arbolia aims precisely at this common goal: to give the land back to the land, to make contexts usable where previously there was the uncontrolled abandonment of waste, to free the land from indiscriminate use by man for a conscious use , in line with the development of the well-being of each individual. The projects with Arbolia that we want to develop are based precisely on this philosophy. They want to recreate a natural habitat and reforestation, if possible, of the environment, giving roots to our future. I am satisfied with this partnership because I hope it will bear fruit that all citizens will reap and that local communities will enjoy".

“This agreement is a virtuous example of collaboration with the public sector, for the benefit of the environment and citizens, and is consistent with Arbolia's mission to create new green areas in Italian territories with the aim of contributing to the achievement of national climate objectives and the improvement of air quality and life,” he commented Dario Manigrasso, Head of Operations, Marketing & Commercial of Arbolia.

About a year after its launch - reads a note - Arbolia has achieved six green belts in five Italian cities, for a total of 11 thousand essences planted. The forests created will be able to absorb up to 681 tons of CO2 and 4.502 kg of PM10 per year. In the coming months, the benefit company will develop initiatives and projects in another twenty Italian municipalities, from the north to the south of the country.
