Italian research on nuclear energy does not wait for politics. We wrote about it recently and now Enel and Ansaldo Nucleare have signed a collaboration agreement to evaluate new technologies and business models for the production of energy from the atom. We knew that something was moving but yesterday the announcement arrived for a partnership on the so-called mini reactors. It is one of the fields favored by scientists and therefore also by the two Italian companies.
Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMR) are the frontier of lighter nuclear power for installation and construction. Future scenarios see the major applications in industry. I am innovative reactors of the latest generation, some of which are still in the development phase. Why stay away from it? The question should be asked of those who hide behind whims that are against developments and research of any kind. Both SMRs and AMRs make it possible to produce electricity from a clean source in an even more economical way. It goes without saying that you need to invest, be motivated and not hindered, in the case of publicly held companies.
Together for a competitive advantage
Let's get to the point. The two companies inform that the collaboration aims to explore the prospects of these two technologies by analyzing their opportunities from an industrial perspective. L'agreement, in fact, it envisages that, in addition to "progressively evaluating the degree of maturity of the new SMR and AMR reactors and the related operational areas, the two companies will build a common path in which the analysis, monitoring and possible evaluation of joint initiatives contribute to verifying the actual applicability of the two technologies". Moreover, they say they are committed to one scouting Italian to see if we also have a support supply chain ready
Both open an Italian construction site, but are already involved in the sector abroad and are an important part of the National Platform for Sustainable Nuclear Energy (PNNS) of the Ministry of the Environment. Enel with Endesa manages sites in Spain, Ansaldo has also made investments in lead-cooled reactors (LFR): another frontier of great impact.
The agreement comes a few days after the start of thesurvey survey voted by Parliament and together, explains a joint Enel-Ansaldo note, we work "for a future competitive advantage for the country in terms of new generation nuclear power". As if to say: let's not complain if others surpass us.
