Nuclear’s “trip to Italy”. Meetings in dozens of cities until October: what awaits us?

On the sidelines of a new outreach initiative, Swg says the number of Italians in favor of new nuclear power plants is growing

Nuclear’s “trip to Italy”. Meetings in dozens of cities until October: what awaits us?

The game that most excites energy experts in Italy is to understand if and when the country will seriously rethink thenuclear energy, to its benefits, to its simultaneous use with renewables. Since Europe has established that it will be possible to resume build power plants of the new generation, the experts of our house have started an exciting game. How many are they? More than you could think and they are starting to have on their side, many supporters.

The other day, when presenting “Stand Up for Nuclear” to the Chamber of Deputies – an information initiative in favour of future plants – it was recalled that a Swg survey found that more than half of Italians are in favor of new nuclear technologies. “Stand up for Nuclear”, until October, will touch 32 cities on the initiative of the Nuclear Committee and will mark an acceleration in the understanding of the source. The stakes in debates and meetings are a scientific and technical response to energy needs of the next 40-50 years.

In Europe 30 reactors by 2050 at a cost of 500 billion

On paper, in Europe, by 2050, XNUMX new buildings should be built 30 reactors with a cost of around 500 billion euros. The energy transition is proceeding and will proceed in phases in Europe, as in the rest of the world. Technologies are growing and opportunities must be seized. We cannot go around the problem by moving nuclear power to the political right or left. “The Meloni government wants to reopen nuclear power plants but is not even able to seriously and effectively manage the safety of radioactive waste currently present in our country,” say the Democratic Party deputies. They have accused the center-right of rushing ahead, rather than taking up the challenge and entering the game with positive ideas. In this affair, the left runs the risk of coming to its senses too late. Hypocrisy in politics is devastating and on this issue there are supporters and opponents, enthusiasts and depressants on every side. We must prepare ourselves for the cohabitation of multiple sources energy and what is usually defined as medium term, has in fact lengthened.

“Italy has always been a nuclear country, so we believe it is paradoxical not to have the willingness, on the part of public opinion, to create energy from nuclear sources”, says the Nuclear Committee. The timing is important for the large amount of money that the new generation nuclear puts into circulation and for the safety and availability of energy that the choice causes far and wide. The old nuclear is a memory and “only renewables”, today, is a not very pragmatic watchword. The initiative of the trip to the cities will register divisions and new opposition. It is a probability, but if it comes true it will not be a good result.
