EU appointments, nothing done. Italy votes against Timmermans

Impasse and postponements on EU appointments. And the decision of the European commissioners on the infringement procedure for debt to Italy has also been postponed. After hours of exhausting discussions, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk suspended the meeting and called a new meeting for tomorrow, Tuesday, at 11. After the rejection of the German Weber, not even the reserve candidate, the Dutch socialist, passed Frans Timmermans who is seen as the plague by the countries of the Visegrad bloc with Poland and Hungary in the lead, and Viktor Orban who defined Timmermans' choice as "the greatest mistake in history". Timmermans' "fault" would have been that he had raised doubts about the authoritarian drift in Poland and Hungary in the 5 years he just spent as Juncker's deputy. But the four countries alone do not reach the specific weight necessary to be able to block it. Italy voted with the East - driven by pressure from Matteo Salvini - and was thus marginalized in the negotiations on the new European summit. Defeat Angela Merkel who failed to control her vote within the EPP.

“We didn't go to the vote because no candidate would have had a majority“said the chancellor Angela Merkel at the end of the EU summit on nominations. Furthermore, even a majority with too narrow a margin, Merkel added, "would not have been enough, even if sufficient according to the rules, in order to avoid tensions" which could have conditioned the future of the EU.

It starts from osaka scheme, around which the negotiations between the leaders revolve. It predicted that despite the victory in the European populars, they would renounce the Commission after Macron's stop to their standard-bearer, Manfred Weber. Juncker's successor became the runner-up, the socialist Frans Timmermans, with Weber presiding over the European Parliament for 5 years – and not two and a half, as per tradition. And again, the Belgian premier Charles Michel at the European Council and the French Villeroy at the ECB. High representative became the Bulgarian Mariya Gabriel, overtaking her compatriot Georgieva. A scheme that would allow Merkel to save the democratic system of leading candidates (whoever wins the European elections takes the Commission with his standard-bearer) and above all to strengthen the government coalition in Berlin by saving Weber's CSU from humiliation and rewarding the SPD with Labor Timmermans. But the road has become difficult. However, the negotiations continue. Among other things, British Prime Minister Theresa May has made it known that in the event of a vote, she will be on the side of the majority.
