Commission appointments: anti-euro presidents for Budget and Finance

After days of waiting, the last piece needed to kick off the legislature has also arrived with the election of presidents, of the vice presidents and secretaries of the 14 commissions of the House and the Senate. Still to be unraveled, however, is the crux of the skein of guarantee commissions: Copasir, Antimafia and Rai Supervision which according to the rules must be distributed among the opposition parties (Pd, Fi and Fdi).

As happened for the appointment of undersecretaries, also in this case Lega and Movimento 5 Stelle have achieved a subdivision from the Cencelli textbook based on the result released from the polls on 4 March. And so in Montecitorio we find eight presidents who belong to the party led by Luigi Di Maio and six to that of Matteo Salvini. Proportions replicated at Palazzo Madama with six presidents for the Carroccio and eight for the pentastellati. In total: 16 presidents for the M5s and 12 for the League.

The nominations of the Northern League were much discussed Claudio Borghi leading the House Budget Committee e Alberto Bagnai head of Finance in the Senate. After having straightened the bar in the Government with the appointment of Giovanni Tria in place of Paolo Savona (on which the veto of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella weighed) in Parliament the Carroccio drops his aces again.

According to the Financial Times the choice of the two parliamentarians known for their critical position towards the euro and Europe would have "triggered sales on Italian stocks" (Piazza Affari -1,2%), even causing the drop of the euro – to 1,1518 against the dollar. The spread also increased to 233 basis points (+7,26%). “Two MPs, staunch Eurosceptics, from the League far-right – we read – have been appointed to head key economic parliamentary commissions, triggering sell-offs on Italian assets”.

Borghi is known for being the promoter of minibots, defined by the former Minister of the Economy, Pier Carlo Padoan, as a real parallel currency to the euro. For his part, Bagnai has written critical essays on the European Union and, as soon as he took office as a senator, proposed stopping the reform of the CCBs.
