Appointments, Bank of Italy: Di Maio, keep your hands off

After Italy's economic debacle and its international isolation, the deputy premier grillino goes to the assault on the Bank of Italy ("We need a turning point") and opposes the renewal of the deputy director Signorini, despite the support of minister Tria (" You Five Stars are crazy") and of the Northern League vice president Giorgetti - It is the dress rehearsal to undermine the independence of the Via Nazionale Institute

Appointments, Bank of Italy: Di Maio, keep your hands off

Anyone who criticizes must be kicked out. It is the law of the Five Stars and the Bank of Italy now ends up in the crosshairs. After the rain of failures collected this week by the yellow-green government - from downward correction of GDP to the fall in industrial production not to mention the international isolation crowned by the withdrawal of the French ambassador in Italy - Thursday evening, during a heated Council of Ministers, the deputy prime minister from Grillino Luigi Di Maio threw off his mask by flatly opposing the renewal of the post of deputy general manager of the Bank of Italy of Luigi Federico Signorini.

The Economy Minister, Tria, and the Northern League undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council, Giancarlo Giorgetti, but that wasn't enough and that was all. By irony of fate, Signorini (the attachment to the speech at the end of the article) yesterday went to Florence to present the two volumes that the Banca d'Italia Library has dedicated to a great democrat and a great Italian like Ernesto Rossi . I wonder if Di Maio and the grillini know who Ernesto Rossi was.

But what is striking is Di Maio's motivation, who probably has not forgiven Signorini's critical remarks on the budget maneuver and the intervention of Governor Ignazio Visco at last Saturday's Forex where he clearly reduced the carefree and unfounded economic optimism of the Government.

"In the Bank of Italy a signal must be given: a change is needed" Di Maio argued harshly in the Council of Ministers and thus the second stop in via Nazionale arrived. In addition to failure to renew Signorini in fact, it should be remembered that the Government has not yet given the go-ahead for the renewal of two directors of IVASS, the Authority which supervises insurance under the wing of the Bank of Italy and which is thus condemned to temporary paralysis.

What is emerges ever more clearly from the intolerance of the Five Stars towards those who harbor doubts and advance criticisms on the legitimacy of the Government's economic policy, suggesting that the grillina strategy to attack the independence of the Bank of Italy and more generally to that of the financial Authorities will not stop there. The goal is big and clearly aims to destabilize the Via Nazionale Institute in view of the renewal in May - just on the eve of the European elections - of the key post of Salvatore Rossi, director general of the Bank of Italy and president of the Ivass, to undermine the very position of Governor Visco.

“You are crazy” Minister Tria yelled at the grillini, and fortunately there is the Quirinal which watches over and President Sergio Mattarella has never made a secret of holding in great consideration and wanting to defend the independence of the Bank of Italy, considered a precious bulwark of the country's international credibility. Now it's time to strike another blow, before the Five Stars do more damage after the disaster they have already made in a few months. Di Maio, keep your hands off the Bank of Italy.
