Nexi-UnionPay: Chinese cards are also spreading in Italy

UnionPay Chinese cards can be used at all points of sale affiliated with Nexi. The company led by Paolo Bertoluzzo has in fact signed a commercial agreement with the Chinese giant which will expand the possibility of accepting UnionPay cards by March 2021.

The Asian company's payment cards are already accepted by around 100 merchants who use Nexi payment processes. With this agreement, within 2 years the service will be extended to the entire base of merchants affiliated with the banks' PayTech, including e-commerce merchants. “Chinese tourists arriving in our country are constantly growing: in 2018 alone they were over 2 million. It is a huge pool of buyers who will be able to make purchases with their UnionPay cards from merchant customers of our partner banks. This is an important advantage for all merchants, especially those operating in the hotel, food and rental car sectors. The partnership with UnionPay therefore allows us to further encourage the spread of digital payments in Italy”, he commented Enrico Trovati, director Merchant Services & Solutions of Nexi.

"Italy is a very important destination for Chinese tourists and we are pleased to have signed the agreement with Nexi because it significantly increases the acceptance of our cards in the country", he declared Wei Zhihong, Market Director of UnionPay International.

UnionPay is the Chinese credit card par excellence, used by many Asian tourists who arrive in Europe and who in economic jargon are defined as "top-spending tourists" able to guarantee substantial income to many merchants.

In Italy, in addition to Nexi, also banks such as UniCredit, Intesa Sanpaolo and BNL allow you to accept payments from the UnionPay circuit.
