The evening auction of Contemporary Art in New York on November 11th presents Untitled, 1968 (New York City) a poignant example of CY TWOMBLY's celebrated “Blackboard” series, from the collection of Audrey Irmas, Los Angeles. The funds raised from the sale will allow the construction of the building to begin The Temple designed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) directed by Rem Koolhaas – The Audrey Irmas Pavilion. The building will be the first religious architecture to be built by OMA.

“The date, size and provenance of Untitled, 1968 (New York City) make it one of the most important examples of the works of Cy Twombly, from the “Blackboard” series still in a private collection” comments Anthony Grant, Vice President of Sotheby's America. “And it's always an honor to welcome such masterpieces to Sotheby's. The painting was sold by us in 1990, coming from the famous Saatchi collection. All of us who care for the arts in Los Angeles have benefited from the extraordinary generosity of Audrey Irmas and her husband Sydney and therefore we are delighted to be able to offer this Twombly masterpiece for such a worthy cause.”

Audrey Irmas comments: “I have loved living with this magnificent work by Cy Twombly for over 25 years. Likewise, the Wilshire Boulevard Temple Foundation has been an important part of my family for generations, and when I heard about the new building and how it would enrich the entire community, I decided it was an appropriate time to share my luck with others. It was a difficult decision to part with such a masterpiece, but the idea of bringing joy and good to others makes me incredibly happy.”
