New York Times: Eni challenges Gazprom on Ukraine

Eni could challenge Gazprom and send gas to Ukraine via Slovakia to loosen Moscow's energy grip on Kiev. This was written by the New York Times, according to which the outgoing CEO of the Italian energy group, Paolo Scaroni, "despite the consolidated relations with Gazprom, the largest supplier of Russian gas to Europe, would be willing to risk irritating Moscow to go meeting with Ukraine”.

Scaroni, continues the financial newspaper, "recently met in Kiev with the Ukrainian energy minister Yuri Pradoan to talk about how to reduce the country's dependence on Gazprom, in order to loosen Russia's grip".

In the short term, Scaroni explained to the New York Times, Eni could channel additional gas to Ukraine through neighboring countries. One possibility, writes the newspaper, could be Slovakia, which recently approved the passage of such flows. "It won't be huge quantities", Scaroni specified following the meeting, "but every cubic meter helps".
