Two extraordinary works to be auctioned on May 12th at Sotheby's New York; an estimate of 40-60 million dollars for Mark Rothko and 40 million for Vincent van Gogh.

Sotheby's New York announce the sale of two works of exceptional importance: the first, Untiled (Yellow and Blue) di mark rothko, dated 1954, comes from the collection of Mrs. And Mr. Paul Mellon; the second, The Allée des Alyscamps di Vincent van Gogh it dates back to 1888, the time of the artist's stay in Arles.

The work Untitled by Mark Rothko, among the stars of Contemporary Art Evening Auction of the 12st May, has an estimate of 40-60 million dollars.

Untitled (Yellow and Blue), dated 1954, was acquired by the Mellon family in 1970 – after the artist's death, remaining in the collection for over thirty years, ten of which – thanks to the generosity of the family – at the National Gallery in Washington DC

untitled, with its large expanses of yellow and blue, it dominates the viewer, immersing him in a vision of supreme balance: the work, like many of his most famous canvases, through an uninterrupted flow of color and light, questions the absolute limits of abstraction.

The Allée des Alyscamps by Vincent Van Gogh will instead be proposed during the Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale of the 5st May, with an estimated $40 million.

The work was created in November 1888, during his stay in Arles, in which Van Gogh planned to form a community of artists under the name of theSouthern studio, inviting Paul Gauguin to collaborate.

His most famous works date back to this period: i Sunflowers,Self Portrait, The Arlesiana e The Coffee at Night.
