New York: works that belonged to publishing magnate David Copley are up for auction

New York, the American Paintings, Drawings & Sculptures auction was held, organized by Sotheby's with a total of hammer prices of $4,092,566 for 203 catalog lots. It was the first auction of the season of American art and works from the XNUMXth century. To highlight a rare watercolor by John James Audubon, Maryland Yellowthroats and two paintings by Elihu Vedder's Young Marsyas (Marsyas Enchanting the Hares) and Autumn Afternoon by Jasper Cropsey'sWorks by XNUMXth-century masters also include works by Thomas Hart Benton, Milton Avery, Walt Kuhn and Andrew Wyeth.

Works little known to the public and to European collectors, with a "mild" taste but equally capable of instilling a certain harmony, which we find mainly in the colors and subjects. If we want to make some analogy with a certain type of European collecting, we could say that it is very close to the taste of the works created between the end of the XNUMXth and the beginning of the XNUMXth century up to Cubism, as in the case of the work of the mustachioed artist Leroy Neiman.
