In League Thaw Trials

In Varese the embrace between Bossi and Maroni. The first promises congresses. The second asks to “kick out those who want to kick me out”. There is no true peace yet and the upcoming municipal elections in Verona are in the background. Meanwhile, the group leader in the Chamber Rguzzoni could be replaced.

In League Thaw Trials

In Varese last night things went quite well. In the end there was too the embrace between an increasingly shaky Bossi (now also from a political point of view) and a Maroni who played at home, acclaimed by all the Northern League people. Naturally there was also Calderoli, who never fails when things seem to be going well. First, the former interior minister had given the usual nods of honor towards the boss: "I won't be the Brutus who will stab Bossi". But above all it was the boss who said that it is now time for congresses for the League.

So, all resolved? Was that between the two historical leaders of the Carroccio just a storm in a teacup? Things are not quite like that. Meanwhile Maroni returned last night to ask to "kick out those who want to kick me out". And many in the hall where the rally was taking place immediately thought of the group leader in the Reguzzoni Chamber. Even if the former Minister of the Interior was keen to say that he (who comes from Varese) cannot be envious of someone from Busto Arsizio (Reguzzoni). Evidence of provincial-regional descent?

Beyond the jokes, the tensions in the League remain, and the one aired in Varese, more than a demonstration of reconciliation, was above all a test of thaw. For peace to break out, much more is needed. Maybe just those congresses that now even Bossi says he wants to hold, but for which it does not yet indicate any date. And in the meantime there are difficult passages. There is a problem with the group leader in the Chamber. Reguzzoni himself recognizes this, who first recalls that he has already resigned and then concludes with certainty that in any case Bossi will be the one to decide.

Then, there is the Northern League demonstration against the Government to be held next Sunday in Milan: probably the signs of a thaw in Varese have precisely the aim of avoiding public disputes in Milan. But on the way there are above all the administrative elections of Verona. Northern League mayor Tosi, whom the experts enlist among the more robustly observant Maronians, will present himself with his own list "for Tosi". Will there also be another Northern League list, perhaps together or in any case connected to the PDL? The mayor excludes this possibility, as does any preventive alliance with the Berlusconians, but it is said that Aldo Bracher (the ambassador of the knight in the Carroccio territories) has been at work for some time in view of the electoral appointment in the city of the Arena.

In short: many problems still open in the League. Bossi doesn't think of giving up the scepter even at congresses. But some sacrifice in the field of the so-called magic circle will have to do it. Reguzzoni? Someone says that even the young son Renzo could pay a price. Mind you, nothing particularly expensive. Only that in the next elections it could not be a candidate for the House. But only because an equally well-paid seat in Strasbourg awaits him.
