Green boating for the protection of the sea, Cannes Yachting Festival launches its commitment to Europe

Six days of exhibitions, tests and meetings to understand if pleasure boating has really taken the green path. Especially if the past year hasn't been useless. Cannes Yachting Festival, the most accredited nautical event in the world, ends on Sunday 11 September. Meanwhile, he has to take stock of what was announced in the 2021 edition: a green path with everyone's help to protect the waters of the sea and free boaters from the accusation of polluting the seas. Then evaluate the advancement of applicable technologies and market responses.

The sector is growing and Italy alone in 2021 had a turnover of over 6 billion euros. In the current edition, therefore, beyond the charm of location and the beauty of the hulls, the eco-sustainable turning point is the background to everything on display. The green course is relaunched with the "green route 2022” with more boats, products and eco-efficient solutions. A part of the show is entirely dedicated to 100% electric and hybrid boats with lengths from 8 to 12 metres. The sector is indicated in the European ecological transition given the sale of high quality hulls.

Cannes Yachting Festival looks to Europe

For years, yachting has been targeted by Environmental associations, Municipalities and Port Authorities throughout Europe for the effects caused by fuels on water and the ecosystem. Not everything is going as expected, acknowledge the French organizers. In these first days of discussions and visits there was some difficulty in "gathering around a single impulse".

The initiatives of individual shipyards and builders have started, but more remains to be done. And not just because top-of-the-range boats have a forte appeal, but because switching to sustainable engines also requires adequate infrastructure. The electric docks, the modern docks, the services are installations to be created with investment by governments. Among the brightest and most sustainable models present in Cannes, however, are the 80 Sunreef Power Eco yacht, which houses 200 square meters of solar panels and the solar-powered Silent 60 which has faced and crossed the Atlantic. The capacity of electric boats and the future of shipyards in Italy and in other countries are getting ready share the principles of the European Union for the protection of the sea. Italy through the PNRR has granted funds to the ports of Naples, Trieste, Barletta to also accommodate pleasure boats. Goal to reduce CO2 by 2035.
