“In 2021 exports increased by 34% and, in the first six months of 2022, they grew by a further 72%. We are satisfied with Italian exports in general and we are very satisfied with pleasure boating exports” said Ferro. “Italian boating is highly appreciated abroad for its ability to share the excellence of the Made in Italy in mechanics, technology, design, furniture, components. All of this answers the question of why the numbers in the sector are so positive: because when demand picks up again, people buy the best product".

Nautical exports at 3,37 billion in March 2022, an all-time high

In detail for 2021, the overall exports of "Pleasure and sports boats" showed a significant resilience of the sector with respect to the negative economic effects triggered by the global Covid-19 pandemic and amounted to over 2,9 billion euros, in an increase of 40,4% compared to the 2020 figure. Non-European countries are confirmed as the main destination for Italian sales abroad: direct exports to non-EU markets were in fact equal to 2,2 billion euros, corresponding to 74,6, 64,3% of Italian exports in the sector (compared to 2020% in 27), while that directed towards the 750,4 EU countries amounts to 25,4 million euros, equal to 35,7% (2020% in XNUMX ).
Considering only i manufacturing sectors most relevant for the Italian trade balance, i.e. those presenting in 2021 a trade surplus exceeding 2 billion euros, the “Pleasure and sports boats” sector ranks tenth in terms of export growth.

2021 sector turnover at historic highs with +31,1%

As stated in the report, 2021 recorded the best increase in turnover ever and the nautical year that has just ended has ensured solid prospects for 2022 as well, consolidating structural growth.

The increase recorded compared to the previous year was 31,1%: an extraordinary figure which allows not only to compensate for the slight decrease recorded in 2020, but to bring the sector's turnover to levels almost similar to those of the record two-year period 2007-2008, says the report.
The new edition contains the data relating to the main territorial production centers of the Italian nautical sector: in first place in the ranking, drawn up by value of turnover, we find the "production center of the Upper Mediterranean" (provinces of Genoa, La Spezia, Massa-Carrara, Lucca, Pisa and Livorno), which excels over the other 4 territorial poles for all the quantities considered. This district hosts 36,7% of the workers in the sector and 54,4% of the turnover. This is followed by the "Adriatic production hub" (provinces of Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena, Rimini, Pesaro-Urbino and Ancona), with 12,3% of the total companies in the sector and a turnover equal to 23,3% of the total turnover of the sector . Lombardy represents 11,8% of national workers in the sector and 9,6% of total turnover.

Contribution to Italian GDP 2021 up by 31,4%

Il contribution of the nautical sector to the national GDP was more than 5,1 billion euros in 2021, in sharp rise (+31,4%) compared to the 2020 figure. The weight of the contribution of boating to the GDP in relation to the national GDP has also grown, going from 2,37‰ in 2020 to 2,89‰ in 2021.
- total employees rose to 26.350, further strengthening the positive employment trend (+9,7% compared to the previous year) which characterized all segments of the sector across the board, with a particular incidence in the construction of new units (+14,7%) in which almost half of the total employees in the sector (14.710).

The data from the Geography of the Nautical Industry has been anticipated

As part of the conference, the preview of the supply chain data "Geographies of the Italian nautical supply chain" was presented, the publication commissioned from the Symbola Foundation by the Mare Nostrum Network of companies (composed of Confindustria Nautica and the service companies of Confindustria Genova , Confindustria Toscana and Confindustria Ancona) which will be presented at the end of the year in a dedicated event.

“The nautical system represents one of the most dynamic segments of the economy” said Domenico Sturabotti, director of the Symbola Foundation, as well as a world reference in the production of yachts and pleasure boats. A leadership built also thanks to a first-rate production network, distributed throughout the country which operates upstream and downstream of the supply chain. In the two-year period 2019-2021, as emerges in the Report produced by Symbola Foundation, companies in the nautical system increased their added value at current prices by +7,8% (with segments such as shipbuilding which saw an increase of +27,9%) against -1,3% for the total economy and -0,2% of Made in Italy, the so-called "4A" of Food, Clothing, Furniture and Automation. Employment also recorded positive results, witnessed by growth for the entire supply chain of +3,2% (+10,3% for shipbuilding production). Behind these results is the ability to create a system both nationally and locally and the strong investment in quality, competence, innovation and sustainability".
