Christmas and crisis, 40% of Italians do not go on vacation. And whoever does it spends little
Recovery? Not at Christmas. Perhaps most Italians won't give up on food and gifts, but almost half of them, according to the results of an online survey conducted by the Centro Studi del Touring Club Italiano, won't go on vacation during the end-of-year holidays.

The data therefore shows that the crisis is still biting mercilessly: according to Touring, in fact, almost 40% of Italians will not move from home and the main reason is, look at it, the economic situation. Moreover, 75% of those who will take a holiday period will still remain in Italy, where the most chosen regions are Trentino-Alto Adige (29% of tourists who will stay in Italy), Lombardy (11%) and Veneto (9% ). The remaining 25% prefer abroad, preferring in any case nearby and possibly cheap destinations such as France (17%), Spain (11%) and Austria (8%). The first non-European country by number of preferences is the United States, but very few can afford it: 5%.

For winter 2013 the economic component is also very important in the choice of destination and type of stay. Given the situation of instability, one Italian out of three will allocate no more than 500 euros to holidays and 72% no more than 1.000 euros. Few (14%) will exceed 1.500 euros. Furthermore, compared to the budget available in 2012, for this year 64% say they are investing the same amount of money, 21% report a decrease and only 15% say it has increased. Furthermore, according to the data collected, the choice of holiday is influenced by the beauty of the places (76% of the answers), followed at a distance by a good cultural offer (27%), sports services (26%), by an adequate food and wine proposal (19%) and a good calendar of events (13%).

As regards the various accommodation facilities, hotels still hold the record (40%) while second homes and the homes of friends or relatives represent an alternative – also linked to the crisis – for 33%. The non-professional hotel sector, on the other hand, covers 24%: rental accommodation (32%), Bed and Breakfast (22%) and campsites (21%) are particularly appreciated which, despite the season, are the third accommodation solution chosen, predominantly associated with mountain tourism. The discriminating factor in this regard still seems to be linked to the economic crisis: in fact, almost half of the interviewees are looking for "an advantageous price". Free wi-fi is essential for 24%, followed by the presence of a wellness area (16%).

The Touring research also analyzed which channels Italians used to plan their trip. Fundamental is the web with 34%: specifically 23% visit the portal of the destination and 11% consult sites with content created by other users. Surprisingly, social networks have very low usages (1%). 16% consult magazines or tourist guides to make their choice and 13%, finally, follow the advice of friends and relatives.

The car is the means of vacation par excellence: 64%, in fact, prefer it over the plane, chosen by 20% of people. Compared to the forecast survey on summer holidays conducted in June, the percentage weight of the ship (from 8% to 1%) and that of the camper (from 8% to 6%) decreases: in this case the explanation is attributable to the seasonal factor. Comparing the answers of those who will go to Italy with those who will choose abroad, it emerges that in domestic travel the use of the car is predominant (80%), followed at a considerable distance by the train (11%). For cross-border holidays, on the other hand, the plane is the preferred means (64%).

The holidays of Italians, according to the survey, will be marked by "dynamism" for those who go abroad: 34% of respondents interviewed will, in fact, go on tours at the expense of stays in the same place (33%). Those who remain in Italy will instead take permanent holidays in 56% of cases.
