Napolitano: “Early vote? Nonsense”

"Let's not talk nonsense." Thus the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, comments on the hypothesis of early elections. The Head of State does not comment on the internal clash in the Democratic Party between the premier Enrico Letta and the secretary Matteo Renzi, but suggests that the question cannot be resolved with the polls.

On the other hand, in the next few hours the challenge between the two leaders of the centre-left will inevitably come to a reckoning. There are two appointments on the agenda.

Firstly, the press conference convened for this afternoon by the Prime Minister, who will present the new coalition plan to relaunch the Government's action and guarantee its survival at least until the end of Italy's presidency of the EU (July-December 2014).

The second and even more decisive turning point will come tomorrow with the leadership of the Democratic Party, earlier than the original convocation on February 20th. At that time Renzi will let you know which path he intends to take.

There are, apparently, only two options: replacement of the Government with a new Executive, expression of the new Pd majority (the Prime Minister does not intend to step aside in the absence of a formal act of no-confidence) or reconciliation with Letta on the basis of the new coalition program.

The third way, theoretically, would be the vote. But for those who should dissolve the Chambers it is "nonsense".
