"Italy cannot remain a prisoner of corporatism and conservatism". This was stated by the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the school year at the Quirinale.
The head of state has never made direct reference to article 18 of the workers' statute, but in his words there seems to be a clear reference to the debate on work that is tearing apart the Democratic Party and the trade union world. Words that suggest a clear endorsement by Napolitano towards Renzi's reforming action.
“Especially in Italy – warns Napolitano – we must decisively renew our institutions, our social structures, our collective behaviour. “Today – he explained – not only Italy but all of Europe are grappling with a profound financial, economic and social crisis. And they find it hard to get out. Italy and the European Union can only get out of it together, with new and courageous policies for growth and employment, aimed above all and more effectively at young people”.
