“Urgent problems and basic questions concerning the economy, society and the state cannot wait. They must receive answers and therefore they demand that Italy give itself a government and express a serious effort of cohesion”. This was stated by the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, during the celebration of International Women's Day at the Quirinale.
"It would be desirable and would constitute a positive signal for those who look to Italy - continued the Head of State - for the choices relating to the top management of the representative institutions to take place in a relaxed and collaborative atmosphere".
Furthermore, a little more than two months after the expiry of his mandate, Napolitano took stock of his seven-year term, emphasizing that "he has never been sheltered from tensions and sudden ups and downs, even if in the end we have always managed to overcome the most acute moments of crisis and risk of confrontation on an institutional level".
International Women's Day "falls at a complicated time for our democratic system and for our country", concluded the President, who nonetheless defined the "significant increase in the female component in the new Parliament" as a "positive novelty" and addressed a "heartfelt welcome in the republican institutions" to the "young deputies: this large representation will not forget to promote women's rights, to offer Italian girls better job and life prospects".
