Napolitano: no to early voting, electoral reform first

In celebrating Liberation Day, the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, rails against anti-politics and calls citizens' representatives to their responsibilities.

"The parties do their part – said the Head of State on the occasion of the celebrations for April 25 in Pesaro -, let so as not to give vent to blind distrust and some demagogue on duty. Stop to remember and reflect before railing against politics. It is necessary to commit oneself so that where something rotten has been created it is eradicated, so that the parties find their ideal impetus, moral tension, new capacity for proposal and governance”.

The goal is "to make concrete answers to the most acute problems - continued Napolitano -, engaging actively with the Government until the natural conclusion of the legislature. The institutions must do their part, from the Parliament and the national Executive to the Municipalities, which are however conditioned today by serious hardships”. Yesterday the specter of early elections it had been evoked by Silvio Berlusconi: according to the Cavaliere, the left would like to return to the polls in October, but this perspective was then flatly denied by the leader of the Democratic Party, Pier Luigi Bersani.

Before thinking about the vote, however, Napolitano deems it necessary "launch a new electoral law that gives citizens the possibility to choose their representatives, and not to vote for those nominated by party leaders".

as to economic crisis that has invested Italy and Europe, "we need to draw on the lesson of national unity that comes to us from the Resistance - the President reiterated again - and we need politics as an imperative commitment".

The Head of State then underlined that he is convinced that Italy will be able to emerge from the crisis through a relaunch "of the country's economic and social development" and "on the basis of a fair distribution of the necessary sacrifices".
