Napolitano: "Monti is not a candidate, he can be involved after the vote"

"Mario Monti is a senator for life and cannot be a candidate in Parliament. He cannot be a candidate of any party“. The president of the republic said, Giorgio Napolitano, answering journalists' questions at the Italian embassy in Paris.

“A senator for life cannot be a candidate in Parliament because he is already a parliamentarian – explained the head of state – it is not a trivial detail but sometimes it is forgotten. He cannot be a candidate of any party but since he is a senator for life and has a studio in Palazzo Giustiniani he will be able to receive anyone who wants to ask him, after the elections, for a contribution, an opinion, a commitment ”.

And to those who ask him whether it is better for Monti to maintain a third party profile, Napolitano replies: “Definitely during the electoral campaign. Then we have to see what kind of government there will be, what the conditions resulting from the vote will be, otherwise we are all making unfounded hypotheses”.

After the elections, however, "anyone who wants to can ask him for a contribution, an opinion, a commitment", said the head of state, explaining that “when my successor does the consultations, that is the place where everyone can express their preference on the assignment of forming the government. It is very true that there are movements and political forces that think that Monti could continue to be prime minister in a political rather than a technical government. This is a right and a faculty that any party has”.
