Napolitano in Germany: "Italy is not in disarray, there is no risk of contagion"

The Head of State, who today met with the President of the German Republic Joachim Gauck, said he was "convinced that Italy cannot fail to follow the great road of European construction, assume its responsibilities and make its share of sacrifices".

Napolitano in Germany: "Italy is not in disarray, there is no risk of contagion"

"Italy is not in disarray" and "is not without a government" after the general elections, because "the Monti government is in office and will govern until the new Executive is sworn in". Furthermore, the Professor "will best represent Italy in the mid-March EU Council", after having "consulted the political forces". This was stated in Berlin by the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, underlining that now "there is no disease to manage", but a "physiological" institutional transition after the elections.

The head of state then said he did not see "any risk of contagion" from Italy to other countries, a fear that was instead expressed yesterday by the German finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble.

“The sovereign people have expressed themselves freely – continued the President -. Democracy is this. It's not that to ensure a result that perhaps makes us more relaxed, we can agree at the table on the result of the elections…”.

Napolitano – who today met the President of the German Republic, Joachim Gauck – therefore said he was "persuaded that Italy cannot fail to follow the great road of European construction, assume its responsibilities and make its share of sacrifices".
