It is no coincidence that Napolitano evokes the Pella government of truce: "It was brief but useful"

Faced with Berlusconi's daily disbandment ("Forza gnocca") and the tensions in the PDL house, the hypothesis of a government of truce, on the model of that of Pella in the summer of '53, seems to be gaining ground, to carry out the electoral reform before the recourse to early voting – President Napolitano spoke about it in Biella

It is no coincidence that Napolitano evokes the Pella government of truce: "It was brief but useful"

A government of truce? "In the past there was and it was useful." This is remembered by the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano who from Piedmont does not hesitate to evoke the Pella government, which "was brief, but served". Of course, the head of state has just visited the polling station from which Pella in Biella had exercised his mandate as city councilor. Yet the reference to today's events is implicit and clear. "I carry out my task in difficult conditions", Napolitano had said shortly before, who then also recalled the words with which the President of the Republic Luigi Einaudi had conferred the job on the Christian Democrat exponent: "There is a need". It could also be recalled that, on that occasion (a rare case in the history of the Republic), the prime minister in charge accepted without the usual reservation. Then the Pella government did not last long: from 17 August 1953 to 21 January 1954. That consideration of the head of state weighs even more politically: "But it was useful".

Up to now, for the immediate aftermath of Berlusconi, there has been talk above all of two hypotheses: a caretaker government or rather a government of national responsibility led by a personality of international prestige, or the immediate recourse to early voting. So with this electoral law that everyone now considers inadequate. Now a third hypothesis could emerge: a government of truce which would also have the advantage of being able to allow the political forces to seek and find an agreement for an electoral law that restores a correct relationship between elected officials and voters, as repeatedly requested by the head of state . It could also be guided by an authoritative institutional figure. Naturally everything will depend on how the debate between the parties and, above all, within the parties develops in these hours. It does not escape anyone that the post-Berlusconi PDL is now speaking openly. Someone (Pisanu, Cazzola, partly Scaiola) has already come out into the open, even if it still doesn't appear who is really ready to take on the responsibility of pulling the plug.

As for the premier, he continues to say he is sure he can go on, he denies the duels with Tremonti, he aims for 2013. And, seeing as he is, regardless of the fact that in those same hours the funerals of the victims of work are taking place in Barletta, between the half-jokingly announces that he will form a new party and call it "Forza gnocca". Theater of politics or theater of triviality?
