Nadia Calviño emerges victorious in the race to presidenza of European Investment Bank (EIB), defeating Daniele Franco, former Minister of Economy in the Draghi government. From 1 January 2024 and for six years the Vice President of the Spanish Government and Minister of Economy, she will be at the helm of the EIB, replacing the German Werner Hoyer, whose mandate – already renewed – is expiring. The nomination marks a historic moment, as she will be there cousin donna to lead the institution since its foundation in 1958. The verdict came during the Eurogroup meeting in Brussels, where EU finance ministers nominated her. To get the green light, the favorable vote of at least 18 EU member states representing 68% of the bank's capital was needed, which means having the support of at least two of the three major European partners, Germany, France and Italy. The technical nomination procedure will now begin.

The other two candidates were Danish Margrethe Vestager, Commissioner for European Antitrust and Italian Daniel Franco.

According to what emerged from Mef sources, the Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti he intervened contesting the procedure used for the selection of the Spanish candidate, but concluded, quoting Boskov, "penalty is when the referee blows the whistle", thus taking note of the common political decision on Calvino.

Who is Nadia Calviño

Nadia Calviño, born in Galicia in 1968, has a solid technical background in Economics and Law, with a past at the Spanish Ministry of Economy and the European Commission. In 2018, she made the leap into politics, taking the helm of the Ministry of Economy under Pedro Sanchez. Currently vice-president of the Spanish government, Calviño has achieved international recognition as president of the International Monetary and Financial Committee of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since 2022.
