Rates on home loans fell to new historic lows at the end of the year. In its latest report, the ABI writes that the average rate on new mortgages fell last month to 2,02% from 2,05% in November.

In December 2015, an average rate of 2,5 per cent was paid to take out a mortgage for the purchase of a house. Two thirds of new home loans are fixed rate.

The downward trend in interest rates also has a positive effect on businesses. Rates on new loans fell to 1,54% from 1,56% the previous month (record low in September at 1,5%). Historical low also for the average rate on total loans to customers: 2,85 percent.

The Abi report also indicates that the growth of loans to businesses and households accelerated in December. The year-on-year growth of the loan stock is estimated at 1,4% to 1.807,7 billion.

Meanwhile, Italian banks' non-performing loans net of write-downs fell in absolute terms in November but remained unchanged at 4,8 per cent compared to total loans. Non-performing loans net of write-downs at the end of November amounted to 85,2 billion (85,5 billion in October).
