Music, David Gilmour: Record Auction for Black Strat Guitar

Almost 4 million dollars, 3.975.000 to be precise, to win the Black Strat, the iconic guitar put up for sale by the historic Pink Floyd guitarist, David Gilmour. The British musician auctioned 120 instruments at Christie's, and in addition to the legendary 6-string, several of these were sold at stellar prices, which pulverized the now old record established in 2004 by Eric Clapton, who sold a guitar for “only” 800.000 dollars. In addition to the top price of the Black Strat, the sale of the 35 Martin D-1969 acoustic – often cited by Gilmour as his favorite and used to play the song "Wish you were here" – sold for over a million dollars, while the white '54 Strat sold for $1.815.000. And then some other instruments were still sold, at so-called "lower" prices: the 1976 Ovation, which sold for $399; the Jedson guitar used for “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” reached 300 thousand, a 1966 Strat at 423 thousand.

“My first Fender – said the Cambridge native artist on the occasion of the auction – was a Telecaster. My parents gave it to me for my 21st birthday. Then I bought a Martin D-35 acoustic from a man on XNUMXth Street in New York. I was going to Manny's to buy an acoustic guitar and this guy came up to me and he was like, 'What do you want? What are you looking for?' Then he brought out this guitar. I strummed and said, 'Okay, this is going to be it'. The Stratocaster tends to highlight the personality of the person playing it. People who play a Fender are more clearly themselves compared to people who play some of the other guitars we know.” The entire proceeds, millionaires, of the auctions will be donated to charity, specifies the website of the Christie's auction house, which however does not further specify the institution or institutions that will be affected by the donation.
