THE Albertina Museum in Vienna houses one of Europe's largest and most outstanding collections of classic modernist paintings: The Batliner Collection. The works were transferred to the Albertina by Rita and Herbert Batliner in 2007, opening a new chapter in the museum's history.
From French Impressionism, Pointillism and Fauvism (including works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Braque and Matisse) to the masterpieces of expressionist artists groups Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter (including paintings by Kirchner, Kandinsky and Nolde) and then the Russian avant-garde and numerous works by Pablo Picasso.

The 2007 decision of Herbert and Rita Batliner to hand over their collection to the public, together with the choice of the Albertina Museum as a partner, have enriched the museum landscape in a lasting way also for contemporary art. From the beginning of the millennium onwards the Batliners began to collect the diverse pictorial production of the present era: Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Alex Katz, Imi Knoebel and Arnulf Raine.
Collecting and Philanthropy
Herbert Batliner, lawyer, one of the greatest art collectors and patrons of our time, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2019, after a long and serious illness at the age of 90 in Vaduz. Today it is one of the world's most important collections of painting modernist and in recent years has become the basis of many successful exhibitions by Picasso, Magritte, Max Ernst and Matisse.⠀ ⠀
