Munch in London: drawings by a pioneering and subversive artist

The creator of the most haunting and iconic face in art. A radical father of expressionism. Norway's answer to Vincent van Gogh. But who was Edvard Munch?

The emotional intensity of The Scream is reverberated throughout the story, speaking to generations. The fact that he doesn't need explanations is probably one of his strengths. Yet perhaps it is also the reason why, beyond its name, so little is known about its creator: The Scream speaks for itself. While it has become a universal symbol of human anguish, it is a deeply personal response to Munch's upbringing and experiences as young artist.

Looking at the pre-war cities of Oslo, Berlin and Paris, the exhibition shows how new ideas about personal and political independence gave rise to an important voice. Visceral, rebellious and hungry for new experiences, Munch rejected his strict Lutheran upbringing to pursue an unconventional lifestyle. He traveled across Europe, drawing artistic inspiration from the bohemian circles he met and his passionate love stories. Munch's work articulated his experiences of life in a rapidly changing Europe, which would be destroyed by the first industrialized global conflict.

In this collaborative exhibition with the Munch Museum in Oslo, discover how he mastered the art of printmaking and explored his remarkable work. Munch's innovative techniques, bold use of color and dark subjects resonated with changing attitudes and defined him as one of the first "modern" artists.
