Are two factors main ones that have led to the increase in revenue from fines: the resumption of traffic with the end of the lockdown and the pandemic which led to an increase in violations of the Highway Code and the critical issues generated by theuse of speed cameras.

Florence turns out to be the city with the higher income from speed cameras with proceeds of 23,2 million euros. In practice, in 2022, half of the takings in the Tuscan capital come from speeding. Next we find Milano with 12,9 million fines through speed cameras and Genoa with 10,7 million. In the capital, the proceeds reach 6,1 million. Perugia, Catanzaro and Aosta do not register penalties while bringing up the rear Napoli with just 18,700 thousand euros fines imposed by speed cameras.

The Codacons, however, highlights the criticality in the use of speed cameras, often misplaced and used as cash-raising tools rather than road safety. “The recovery of car traffic after the pandemic period has certainly had an impact on the sharp increase in fines, but the data show that serious problems remain regarding the use of speed cameras, often placed on the roads in a completely incorrect way for the sole purpose of cash register and use Italian motorists as real ATMs", said the president of Codacons, Carlo Rienzi.

To help Italian citizens contest unfair fines, Codacons has organized a webinar on June 12 where lawyers and industry experts will provide information to sanctioned motorists.
