The changeover to the presidency of MPS would have reached its final stage. According to Reuters, Massimo Tononi is close to being appointed president of Banca MPS to replace Alessandro Profumo who, as expected, will leave at the beginning of August.
The agency cites two sources who are following the story personally and a source from the Treasury, where yesterday Tononi met with Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan, who owns a 4% stake in the Sienese bank.

"With Tononi we are in the finishing straight," said one of the sources. The other is more explicit and says that "it will be Tononi". The Treasury source speaks of a "possible and appreciated" candidacy.

Profumo said he wanted to leave the bank, which carried out the three billion capital increase requested by the ECB, on the occasion of the presentation of the half-year report on 6 August.

Tononi, president of the Italian stock exchange, is also president of Prysmian and was undersecretary of the Treasury in the last Prodi government in 2006.
