Mozambique, Eni awarded rights to new exploration area

Eni, together with Statoil, Sasol and Enh, has been awarded the exploration and development rights of the A-5A offshore block in the Mozambique area called Angoche, which is located in the deep waters of the Northern Zambezi Basin, approximately 1.500 kilometers northeast of the capital Maputo.

The block, which extends over a total area of 5.145 square kilometers at a water depth of between 200 and 1.800 metres, is located in a completely unexplored area which the consortium believes may contain significant hydrocarbon resources.

Eni, through its subsidiary Eni Mozambique, is the operator of the Consortium with a 34% stake. The other partners are Statoil and Sasol with 25,5% each and the Mozambican state company Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH), with 15%.

Eni has been present in Mozambique since 2006 and is the operator of Area 4 with an indirect stake of 50%, held through the subsidiary Eni East Africa. In Area 4, following an intense exploration and appraisal campaign, supergiant natural gas resources were discovered between 2011 and 2014, estimated at 2.407 billion cubic meters of gas in place.

The other partners of Area 4 are Galp Energia, KOGAS and ENH with 10% each. CNPC holds a 20% indirect stake through Eni East Africa.
