Moody's: electricity prices down in Italy, companies exposed

The price of wholesale electricity is set to fall. To certify it is Moody's Investors Service in a report entitled "Europe's Electricity Markets: In Italy, Power Prices to Fall on Weak Demand, Low Gas Prices".

According to the report, in our country, electricity prices will remain in a range of 42-47 euros per megawatt hour until 2020, falling from the current 48-51 euro/MWh. Contributing to the downturn would be several factors, such as low gas prices, subdued demand and excess production capacity.

"The reduction in electricity demand - explained Moody's vice president and senior analyst Alessando La Scalia -, due to a greater impact of energy efficiency measures on consumption, is exerting further downward pressure on the price of electricity" .

"In our view, the electricity system will remain characterized by excess supply, despite the closure of many obsolete thermoelectric plants". Enel (Baa2, outlook stable), A2A SpA (Baa3, stable), Edison (Baa3, stable) and Compagnia Valdostana delle Acque (Baa1, stable), given their significant electricity generation activity in Italy, while Hera (Baa1, stable ) and Acea (Baa2, stable) are much less exposed.
