Monti: "Unions and businesses should do more"

A few hours after the meeting with the trade unions at Palazzo Chigi, the Premier: "I think that our decisions have partly contributed to aggravating the economic situation, but only in this way can we have any hope of having recovered in a lasting way".

Monti: "Unions and businesses should do more"

"It is necessary a joint effort of the social partners, which must prevail over particularisms. I am convinced that we will succeed." This is the appeal launched by the premier Mario Monti, this morning at the Milan textile fair, just a few hours after this afternoon's meeting with the trade unions (appointment at Palazzo Chigi at 16 pm). The Professor invited all the social partners to "do something more, with their joint commitment".

"Just as the government is doing, for better or worse, what is important for businesses - continued Monti -, we expect and demand that businesses and trade unions are able to do something more, with their joint commitment".

As for the negative data on GDP released yesterday by Istat, "I think that in part our decisions have contributed to aggravating the economic situation – added the Premier -. Obviously, only a fool can think of affecting a structural evil, born decades ago, without causing an aggravation in the short term, which derives from a reduction in domestic demand. Only in this way can there be any hope of having remedied the situation in a lasting way”. But Monti is "convinced" that the social partners "are aware of this, only in this way can we have some hope of having worked for a lasting recovery".
