Monti: no Irpef cut coming

The Premier denies press rumors about a possible cut in income tax rates: "A less onerous tax is a sacrosanct need for honest taxpayers, but starting now to distribute the benefits of the recovery would be premature".

Monti: no Irpef cut coming

"The tax burden on individuals and businesses in Italy is undoubtedly excessive, but at the moment the focus on rebalancing public finances cannot be relaxed". With these words the premier Mario Monti denies in a note the rumors published yesterday by "La Repubblica" about a possible cut in personal income tax rates.

"The Government is not currently studying a provision of this kind – continues the Professor -. A less onerous tax is a sacrosanct requirement for honest taxpayers and making it concretely possible, without making unrealizable promises, is a goal. But before the recovery and reform policy is consolidated, if possible also with roots that make its continuation probable with the governments to come, to start distributing the benefits of restructuring, for example by reducing personal income tax, would be premature".

“When such a perspective is outlined and will be considered credible also by the markets – concludes Monti – the hypotheses of a lower tax burden will not only be desirable, but concretely achievable”.
