Monti will make it: Pd and Pdl say yes

Mario Monti's attempt to form a new government has undergone a positive acceleration this morning. So much so that immediately after the morning's meetings he went to report to President Napolitano. The impression is that we could be on the finishing straight. The president in charge has essentially received the go-ahead from the two main parties: the Pd and the Pdl.

The meeting with the CGIL delegation is also expected shortly, which in recent days had not hidden its distrust on more than one programmatic aspect, but which is showing itself to be increasingly optimistic about the meeting with Monti. At this point, the Bocconi professor could lift the reservation as soon as possible and the hypothesis that the Government could be in the fullness of its constitutional prerogatives (with the confidence of the Senate and the Chamber) by the end of the week would materialize more and more.

At the end of the morning it was the PDL secretary Angelino Alfano who gave the impression that many of his party's reservations and suspicions were on the way to being overcome. Alfano spoke of a positive meeting and an attempt by Monti now close to having a "successful outcome". As for the programme, he repeated and reiterated that for his party it is essential to maintain the commitments made with the EU by President Berlusconi. The Pd delegation had previously been received. Bersani was also optimistic. He explained that he had not placed time limits on the action of the new government and confirmed "full support for an authoritative government with a strong technical caliber, to support Monti no less, but better". The conclusion is that “the practice is well underway”. Then the Pd delegation went to the Quirinale to meet the President of the Republic.

Naturally, as always happens in the last stages of a negotiation, there was no shortage of unfounded hypotheses. Like the one, immediately denied by the Democratic Party, for which Bersani's party would have given a favorable opinion to the possible entry of Giuliano Amato and Gianni Letta into the new Executive. A final reason for controversy arose from an interview with Bocchino for which the third pole would have thought of nominating Monti as prime minister in the event of elections. The PDL spokesman Capezzone replied immediately that in this way the third prong risked blowing everything up. Immediately after the appropriate clarifications and denials.

This afternoon Monti will conclude his meetings with the social forces. For Confindustria, the Monti government has no alternative. In turn, the secretary of the Cisl Bonanni has already made it known that "if the Government decides to discuss pensions, we will discuss them". And the first judgment of the CGIL on the meeting with the president in charge seems oriented towards beauty. As for the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano, in his opinion we are going through "complex and difficult" days. But even in the presence of these difficulties, the head of state joyfully and affectionately received the national football team at the Quirinale. It could be an auspicious sign.
