Monti candidate? The two different nos of Berlusconi and Bersani

The Knight says he doesn't fear him but warns that if he does he will become opponent number one, while the secretary of the Democratic Party underlines that "Monti must still be useful for the country, but it would be better if he stayed out of the dispute" – Zaia to Berlusconi: "Until proven otherwise, the League will run alone to the policies".

Monti candidate? The two different nos of Berlusconi and Bersani

Everyone is talking about it, but hardly anyone would like him as a candidate for prime minister in the electoral campaign. Except, of course, the center of Casini and Montezemolo. Mario Monti has not yet resigned from his position as premier, but his possible return to the field in the next elections is already being discussed. Suspicions, fears or hopes - depending on your point of view - that the Professor himself fueled with that deliberately ambiguous phrase ("now I feel freer"), pronounced immediately after last Saturday's step back. The only certainty so far is that the prospect of finding the chief technician on the list of opponents does not please either the PDL or the Democratic Party. Silvio Berlusconi yesterday said he didn't fear him but the day before he had warned that he would be prepared to consider him number one opponent if Monti took the field, while today Pier Luigi Bersani explicitly invited him not to run.

“I have always said that Monti must still be useful for the country, but it would be better if he stayed out of the contention – said the leader of the Democrats -. Everyone chooses as he believes, with great tranquility. Everyone makes their own assessments. We have always loyally supported this transition operation that the right has scarred in recent weeks".

As for the future, "there is the possibility of having a relationship with Monti in the name of Italy - continued Bersani - and I have already said that it would be easier" without his direct candidacy for the next policies, "but with this I have no no will to inhibit his personal choice”.

In any case, “even in these days and weeks we are making ourselves available for anything that can serve to reassure the markets and our European and world interlocutors – continued the Pd candidate -. The government is still in office and a political force, ours, is responsible and always puts Italy first. The rapid approval of the stability law may be the first response”.

From Bersani also came a heavy jab at the right, which "after almost ten years of government has brought us to the precipice and now, without even hinting at a reflection or proposing the slightest change, it is proposing itself as it is according to the principle of eternal return ”.

Finally, the uncomfortable topic of alliances. The latest indecent proposal is the one sent by the Knight to Matteo Renzi, which gave rise to a colorful curtain (“The door is open”, “Close it as well”). On this front, the secretary of the Democratic Party invites the former prime minister to avoid "falling into ridicule".

In the same hours, Berlusconi also collects another great refusal. This time, however, the sender is not a member of the opposing side, but one of the former allies. It is the Northern League Luca Zaia, governor of Veneto: “I don't know what the definitions of the last few hours between Berlusconi and the leaders of the Northern League are, if anything there have been – said Zaia regarding future alliances for policies -. I'm just saying that the path traced is very impervious. Until proven otherwise, the League remains alone, after which it will be up to Maroni and the federal assembly to make decisions on alliances”.
