Monti: "We avoided the collapse"

The Premier in Bari for the inauguration of the Fiera del Levante: "I believe that many of the reforms made by the Government have suffered from distress, but taken all together they have made it possible to prevent Italy from having a collapse that may have been irreversible for a long time and with it Europe".

Monti: "We avoided the collapse"

“I share some criticisms directed at government action. On the contrary, I would share them if I forgot for a moment what the challenge we had to face was and in part is". This was stated by Prime Minister Mario Monti, speaking at the Petruzzelli theater in Bari during the inauguration of the Fiera del Levante.

“I believe that many of the things that have been done have suffered from distress – continued the Premier -, but taken all together they have made it possible to prevent Italy from having a collapse that may have been irreversible for a long time and with it Europe”.

In Italy "these days we are seeing the first fruits of the action that the Government, with the strong and loyal support of political forces that up until the eve had difficulty in communicating with each other".

And, according to the Premier, "it would not have been possible for the European Union to have moved with all its institutions and in full respect of the autonomy of those institutions, starting with the Central Bank, with a growth policy if that country from which the fate of the EU was seen to depend (Italy, ed) had given signs of a continuation of the lack of awareness of the criticality of its own situation. The institutional system of Europe would have closed like a hedgehog”.

The Professor said he preferred that Italy "be a force believed, I don't know if credible, of Europe, even if these objectives have been achieved at the cost of great sacrifices for citizens and businesses, sacrifices that we have tried to bend to the need for greater equity in the face of very scarce resources".

At this point, the government and the social partners must commit themselves to “creating the conditions for a new economic development on more solid foundations. Let's break – added the Prime Minister – the cage of austerity that has wrapped up our economy, even through our hands.

According to Monti "Italy has already restarted" even if, he acknowledged, "today the recovery is not seen in numbers yet, except for a few glimmers, but it is truly within us and is now within the country's reach".
