Scooters: accidents are less than you think

Scooters: accidents are less than you think

In Italy, every 10 thousand scooters in shared mode 44 occur accidents. The claims rate, therefore, is just about 0,004%, in a sector that has 10 operators and over 42 authorized sharing scooters in more than 30 cities. The data is contained in a study sponsored by Assosharing and the Sharing Mobility Observatory at the Ministry of the Environment.

The results of the research were illustrated on Wednesday during a hearing before the Transport Committee of the Chamber. On that occasion, Assosharing, the trade association of the sharing mobility sector, also put forward a series of proposals to improve road safety by introducing some rules involving different types of vehicles.

As far as scooters are concerned, Assosharing makes the following suggestions:

  • reduce 25 to 20 km/h the speed limit;
  • raise the maximum speed in pedestrian areas at 10 km/h to make the means more stable;
  • introduce a clearly visible univocal code to identify each single vehicle;
  • insert a compulsory informative tutorial on the correct use of the medium in the sharing apps;
  • promote education campaigns by operators;
  • create a call center and a toll-free number for emergency assistance;
  • introduce the obligation to upload to apps a photo at the end of each ride to check that the vehicle is parked correctly;

Assosharing also proposes to extend the insurance obligation also to individuals and not only for scooters, but also for pedal assisted bicycles.

Finally, the Association requests that the concept of "sharing vehicle" be included in the highway code.
