World Cup Brazil 2014, data traffic is a record: already 32 terabytes

The data traffic generated during the World Cup in Brazil already amounts to 32 terabytes, which in just ten days surpassed the previous record dating back to the 2010 South African World Cup. This is what Oi, the Brazilian telecommunications company and sponsor of the tournament, reveals .

Data traffic far exceeded that of last year's Confederations Cup. During the 15-day competition held in Brazil, the volume of data transmitted on the network was seven terabytes.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup also outpaced other major international sporting events this year. During the 17-day Winter Olympics in Sochi, total traffic was approximately 34 terabytes, while 1,9 terabytes of data was used during the Superbowl.

The huge amount of data traffic mostly depends on the same user using two or three computers, tablets and smartphones at the same time. Oi estimates that during the first ten days, 152 devices connected to the Wi-Fi network for mass media in the 12 stadiums.
